The Value of LCD TVs
Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 20HL86 is only 3.4 inches deep without the included stand. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.
Video
Response time is the interval an LCD screen takes to switch from its darkest color to its lightest color and back again, measured in milliseconds (ms). This screen's response time is 8 ms, which is at the faster and better end of the spectrum. This screen is likely to display cleaner, sharper images during high-action scenes and display fewer image artifacts than other screens in its class.
While it lacks QAM and ATSC tuners to receive HD broadcasts, it does have a built-in NTSC tuner that will display traditional cable and over-the-air analog broadcasts.
HDMI Compatible
The set comes with a built-in High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) port. HDMI is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly from a DVD player, next-generation game system, or some other digital video source. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format or compressed. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.
Audio
The 20HL86 has stereo speakers and is compatible with the MTS stereo television audio standard, and even features dbx noise reduction. Toshiba's Surround Sound feature uses advanced audio processing to mimic the all-encompassing sound of satellite speakers.

DVD-Audio playback offers super-high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) sound derived from special mixes and new masterings of many new and "catalog" music titles. DVD-Audio discs typically provide a choice of multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.
Your DVD movies will look and sound great through the system's 54 MHz/10-bit video decoder, video depth enhancer, progressive-scan video output (for use with high-definition and HD-ready televisions), and Dolby Digital and DTS discrete 5.1-channel surround decoding and rendering. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. This feature can only be appreciated on high-definition and HD-ready TVs.
The speaker set includes four bookshelf-sized satellite speakers (front and rear left and right) powered by 30 watts each, a 110-watt center-channel speaker (critical for handling most of a movie's dialogue and sound effects), and a powerful, 140-watt subwoofer optimized for unobtrusive placement. All speakers are magnetically shielded to protect your TV from distortion induced by the speakers' magnetic fields. A digital-synthesized FM/AM tuner lets you listen to your favorite radio stations.

The F20TF20's three-line comb filter further enhances picture quality by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation). Auto color balance resets the individual picture tube guns (red, green, blue) to maintain consistent overall quality for the life of the tube, while auto color control maintains natural tones and color fidelity. Dynamic Black Stretch enhances contrast and detail by extending black levels in bright scenes.
The set's G-LINK Gemstar Interactive connector allows the GUIDE Plus+ GOLD System to work with your VCR (enabling one-touch record) and/or your cable box (providing the ability to tune directly to a station while the program guide is on a TV screen). Connections include two sets of stereo audio/video inputs with S-video and component-video inputs (YPrPb), a headphone output, and one pair switchable audio outputs. If a video image remains stationary, it can eventually burn a permanent after-image into the screen. Automatic Phosphor Aging Compensation (APAC) periodically shifts your television picture in increments that are tiny but still large enough to blur image retention. Active Control performs continuous picture analysis and maintains control of Automatic Digital Noise Reduction and auto sharpness. A three-line digital comb filter gives you Improved chroma/luminance separation over standard two-line glass comb filters for a difference you can really see.
Eye Fidelity gives you a choice between two different scanning techniques: progressive and interlaced scanning. Progressive scanning doubles the number of visible picture lines per field by displaying all picture frame lines at once, eliminating line flicker. Interlaced mode reduces annoying motion artifacts and helps smooth jagged lines sometimes seen on images of curved and angled surfaces.
The set's dual-tuner picture-in-picture lets you monitor one TV channel while simultaneously watching another. Its 10-watts-per-channel sound system offers both Virtual Dolby Surround and Incredible Surround, processing circuitry that produces the sensation of surround sound without the hassle of installing additional rear speakers. The set uses large, 4-by-6-inch stereo speakers and also features an auto volume limiter to minimize drastic level changes between, say, a TV program and its commercials.
Connections include three each composite- and S-video inputs, two component-video inputs (one HD, one standard), and a DVI direct digital input for use with a compatible DTV set-top box or other DVI device.
